"According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, teeth whitening is the #1 request from patients between ages 20 and 50, and more than a billion dollars a year is spent on the procedure. CNN Anchor - Paula Zahn: Home kits are the low-cost version of professional teeth whitening services, and come in a variety of styles. New York Dentist - Dr. Lou Siegelman: We tested 22 volunteers, and it ranged from one shade difference to eight shades lighter."

"An informed do-it-yourself approach may be cheaper and, ultimately, just as effective. Costing $200 to $400, the kits work as well as or better than in-office treatments, according to Matis. In studies, he has found that at-home treatments outperform all tested in-office products."

When you're flipping through old photos, do you see that your smile used to be brighter?

Over time, the food you eat, what you drink, and other lifestyle habits can discolor once-white teeth and reveal the duller layer of natural enamel underneath. Coffee, soda, tea and red wine are all common culprits.

Pigments found in these beverages become lodged in cracks in tooth enamel, leading to buildup and discoloration. Teeth become yellow, or even brown. The good news is that recent advances in home tooth whitening technology have made whitening a realistic possibility for millions who can't afford the astronomical fees that dentists charge for tooth whitening services. In fact, it is estimated that ten million Americans will purchase tooth whitening products or services this year.

Current clinical studies performed by leading dentists show that the bleaching compounds found in tooth whitening gels will measurably lighten tooth enamel on their own, without exposure to light. The studies performed were "split arch" studies, which means that the teeth on one side of the subjects' mouths were treated with a whitening gel, while the teeth on the other side were treated with a whitener and a light source. The result was that the teeth on both sides of the subjects' mouths were equally lightened. The bleaching compounds in the gel-based whiteners were effective on their own, and did not require lasers or UV lights in order to yield results. Results continued to be equal over the period of one year.
